Psychics Help Police Solve Cold Cases

Psychics can help police discover new investigative leads when all other leads have been exhausted.  Writers can incorporate new plot elements and opportunities for conflict when they introduce psychic elements into their crime novel.  Consider using psychic characters to move the investigation into new directions, introduce new plot lines or even conflicts between believers and skeptics. The psychic element may also interfere or derail an investigation if the information is incorrect.

The following notes taken from a Discovery documentary called Sensing Murder may provide some inspiration for writing about a psychic investigator.

On July 30, 2003, 22 year old Angela was beaten to death in her home. The only witness was her 3 year old son.  Around 6:30 Angela’s boyfriend called her from his workplace.  Sometime later, the killer came to Angela’s home and attacked her, bludgeoning her over the head and fleeing.  There were no signs of forced entry and nothing was taken from the scene, so robbery was not believed to be the motive.  Investigators questioned her boyfriend, friends, associates and employers. They also had a child psychologist work with Angela’s son hoping he would mention something that could be considered a lead.  DNA found at the crime scene hasn’t matched samples on national data base and DNA could not be obtained from all of the suspects.

With no remaining leads to follow in the case, police seek the help of Pam Coronado and Laurie Campbell.

Laurie and Pam work separately so they don’t influence each other’s readings.  Laurie works with Sheriff Don Albrecht and Pam works with Detective Sgt. Mike Kostich. They begin by holding a bracelet worn by Angela at the time of her death.  Pam describes a young woman, with a happy outlook.  She also sensed the Angela was killed at home, either her home or a home where she felt safe.

Laurie describes Angela as playful and social with a large circle of friends, wondering aloud if she was too friendly with the wrong person.

Both psychics sense that Angela was choked and beaten. Laurie and Pam are then given a photo of Angela.  Pam and Laurie both sense a dark haired, medium build man, who Angela knew and trusted.  They both feel only one killer was involved.  Pam sees a light colored truck and they both pick up on tractors and farming.

The motive seems to be jealousy and revenge, a case of obsessive love gone bad. Neither feel it was a calculated crime, carried out by a cold blooded predator.

At the crime scene, Pam is immediately drawn to the area where Angela was killed. She is then pulled to the side of the garage to the back yard, believing this is the escape route of the killer.  The person parked behind the home and knew how he was going to leave, so he was familiar with the area.

Laurie feels Angela opened the door, surprised to see her visitor, but not shocked. She thinks the killer is a quirky odd ball, maybe not criminal, but creepy.

Back at the station, Pam and Laurie look through suspect photos. Each picks out several photos based on images they have seen and the energy she feels from them.  When detectives compare notes, they find the same photos were selected by each psychic.  The investigators will recheck alibis and focus on the suspect profiles provided by Laurie and Pam.
