Jack the Ripper is the first modern day serial killer and remains one of the most notorious.
Over 100 years ago, he terrorized London, murdering and mutilating women and leaving their bodies displayed. His crimes were well publicized by the media, and several letters were sent to the police taunting them. The police believed the letters were hoaxes, sent by journalists to sensationalize the real events. One letter, know as ‘Dear Boss’ letter, was signed “Jack the Ripper” and so the name stuck.
Dear Boss,
I keep on hearing the police have caught me but they wont fix me just yet. I have laughed when they look so clever and talk about being on the right track. That joke about Leather Apron gave me real fits. I am down on whores and I shant quit ripping them till I do get buckled. Grand work the last job was. I gave the lady no time to squeal. How can they catch me now. I love my work and want to start again. You will soon hear of me with my funny little games. I saved some of the proper red stuff in a ginger beer bottle over the last job to write with but it went thick like glue and I cant use it. Red ink is fit enough I hope ha. ha. The next job I do I shall clip the ladys ears off and send to the police officers just for jolly wouldn’t you. Keep this letter back till I do a bit more work, then give it out straight. My knife’s so nice and sharp I want to get to work right away if I get a chance. Good Luck.
Yours truly
Jack the Ripper
Dont mind me giving the trade name
Conspiracy theories thrived; suspects ranged from a homeless, mentally ill man to Prince Albert.
Polly Nichols was a mother and wife. She was separated from her husband and homeless at the time of her death. At the scene of the crime investigators recall the discovery of the first victim. Nichols’ wasn’t raped, however, her sexual organs were mutilated and her abdomen had several large gashes. Polly Nichols was a prostitute living in the toughest part of the city, the East End, in a district known as Whitechapel.
All the crimes occurred within a one mile radius. A poacher comes from outside of the community to hunt while a marauder hunts within familiar home territory. Most criminals commit crimes close to where they live, but not too close. Investigators have analyzed data of historical cases to predict where the killer lives in relation to the crime scenes.
The second victim was Anne Chapman. She was nearly decapitated when her throat was slashed, her uterus was removed and she was disemboweled, her intestines strewn over her head. The killer was brutal, frantic during the killing, but organized. His ability to avoid capture despite high risk stakes indicates intelligence and skilled deception.
He killed his victims by manual strangulation before dissecting their bodies. He needed to incapacitate the victims so he could cut without struggling. The idea the Ripper was a doctor or surgeon has been considered.
The third and fourth victims, Elizabeth Stride and Catherine Eddowes were killed on the same night. The Ripper was interrupted when he attacked Stride, unable to complete his grisly work. Frustrated at being interrupted, he took more time and effort with Eddowes, attacking her face, taking her nose
The fifth victim was Mary Kelly. The violence was extreme, escalating with each victim. He had plenty of time with the body, the first victim killed in her own home, that he cut apart her entire body.
Forensic testing has been done on all remaining evidence and there was no DNA or other physical evidence remains.
