Here are some interesting concepts that you may be able to incorporate in your next book.  There is plenty to explore in the mysteries surrounding faith healers; whether their results are due to divine mercy or mass hysteria.

There are people who believe they can health by laying hands on the infirmed.  People flock to these healers, hoping to find miracles and salvation.  Believers claim they have been touched by the hand of God.  Critics say external stimuli, such as the sensation of touch, or even the anticipation of touch can cause the brain to release endorphins.

Not all healers are associated with the church or claim divine intervention.  Therapeutic touch was invented in 1972, and it has been used world wide by medical professionals. Practioners say they can feel imbalances in a subject’s energy field to get a sense of where the illness resides in the body.

Emily Rosa was 11 years old when she conducted a science experiment for her school’s science fair.  She tested practicioners of therapeutic touch with a blind test.  Only 44% of the times were test subjects about to detect an energetic field, Emily’s results were widely published in medical journals

Dowsing is an ancient practice of using a pendulum and focused thoughts to find objects, usually associated with finding water. Believers think the power can be expanded to find weapons, tunnels, even people, especially useful in war time.  Dowsing was used during Vietnam, though unofficially. 

Dowsers throughout history have roused the fears of the superstitious; those who consider it a dark art or conspiracy with the devil.

James Randi has offered a million dollar prize to any dowser who could prove their skill.  He has yet to reward the prize. Skeptics believe all motion of the divining rods or pendulums occurs because of the idiomotor effect, unconscious movement by the dowser.

Human beings produce an energy field around the body, an aura.  Auras should be balanced for well being.  Kirlian photography is believed to show a person’s aura.
