Strange things are happening in Maine. Normally reports of bizarre mutant animals, described as “half-rodent, half-dog” with monstrous cries and glowing eyes, wouldn’t be news worthy. But these creatures are menacing Maine residents, who have endured all manner of monsters for decades. At least in fiction. Stephen King has unleashed the vilest of villains upon Maine’s citizenry, slicing through the thin fabric that separates fact from fiction. In The Dark Tower series, Mr. King comes face to face with the subjects of his imagination.
I bet he’d love to get a look at the corpse found a couple of weeks ago. Before the animal was struck by a car on Route 4, witnesses had seen it prowling neighborhoods. Michelle O’Donnell told reporters “It was evil, evil looking. And it had a horrible stench I will never forget…We locked eyes for a few seconds and then it took off. I’ve lived in Maine my whole life and I’ve never seen anything like it.”
Others have reported seeing a mysterious animal, charcoal gray, weighing between 40 and 50 pounds with a bushy tail, a short snout, short ears and curled fangs hanging over its lips.
Years ago, in northern Maine, another mysterious animal was shot by hunter. Wildlife officials got a DNA analysis and found the animal was a wolf-dog hybrid. Some speculate this is another hybrid, perhaps coyote-dog or maybe it’s something more sinister.
Think of where you might take this in a story…
Secret genetic research to create a breed of dog with super strength / intelligence / blood lust.
New species emerge, evolving at radical rates due to environmental effects, threaten mankind.
Non humanoid aliens, mistaken for animals. Their true nature hidden from human eyes.
Imaginings become realities for a horror writer / autistic child / subject of experiments.
