The Hollow is the second book of the Sign of Seven Trilogy by Nora Roberts, featuring childhood friends, Caleb, Fox and Gage. As children, the boys unwittingly released a demon when they performed a blood ceremony to seal their friendship. They are forever linked to the evil that terrorizes their small home town, Hawkins Hollow, every seven years and dedicated to protecting the people they love. They have a little help from three ladies, Quinn, Layla and Cybil, who were drawn to the Hollow by blood, all descendants of a child conceived in rape by the demon.
It’s no coincidence that there are three boys, three girls and three books. Each book seems to highlight the coupling of the characters, with Layla and Fox taking center stage in The Hollow. Their romance is tentative and earnest, much like their characters.
Nora Roberts is a writer who keeps us guessing. Her books can’t be easily categorized as “romance” or “suspense” because she blends so many different genres into one. The Hollow borders on horror with some truly terrifying scenes that include creepy children, snakes and killer birds, but at its soul is still a romance, delivering just what Roberts fans have come to expect.
